Race Weekend Recap from SLSMTB JVIII racer; Ben Carmody:

SLSMTB traveled up to Wausau, Wi this past weekend for race #3 of the Wisconsin High School Cycling League. The team was represented well with many top 10 finishes and a total of 7 podium finishers. Following pre-ride on Saturday, head coach Dave Bender gave all athletes a great overview of the course, along with race strategy in the team meeting.

Sunday morning the racecourse was slick resulting in a challenging course for the early morning racers. The first race of the day was 8th-grade boys. SLS athlete Jack Bozych had an amazing recovery after a tough start to the race. Jack passed nearly 30 other riders and ultimately finished 2nd by only 0.12 seconds. Rylan Bozych finished in a solid 3rd place in the 7th-grade boy’s race and Kylee Olenick had another good race finishing 3rd in the 6th-grade girls race.

The freshman boy’s class has turned out to be one of the most competitive in the whole league this season. Logan Powers had a strong race and took 2nd place in D2 freshman after a sprint finish with two athletes from Chippewa Valley Composite. John Olenick and Charlie Themanson finished 5th and 9th scoring good points for Wilmot High School. Hayeln Engdahl continues to show improvement and is closing in on a top 10 finish with his season's best finish of 12th. Maddie Micklinghoff and Sami Brooks represented the team well in JV3 girls with 4th and 7th place finishes respectively. In the last race of the day, Ben Carmody took 2nd in JV3 boys after a hard fought tactical race through the pack. Connor Buchanan and Ryan Paupore worked together throughout the 4 lap boy’s varsity race and came across the line together both within the top 10.

With good results throughout the team, SLS Composite finished 3rd out of all D2 teams, Wilmot Highschool finished 4th, and Lakeview Tech finished in 10th. The team looks forward to a weekend off as they continue to prepare for back to back weekends of racing to close out the race season.
